When I think of Florence, I am reminded of questions that I have not yet been able to completely answer or at least answer to my satisfaction. There are three Statues of David in Florence. A bronze version was erected just south, across the Arno river, in the Piazzale Michelangelo . A second stand-in fronts the Palazzo Vecchio. The third and original Statue of David is housed at the Galleria dell’Accademia. To the casual visitor of the city, what difference does it make to see the replica and not the real McCoy? What motivation is there to stare at a chunk of marble sculpted nearly 500 years earlier? More broadly, why even go abroad when this and many other wonders of the world could be seen from the comfort of home on the internet?
TRAVEL TIP: Like the Vatican Museum, it is advisable that tickets to visit Michelangelo’s Statue of David at the Galleria della’Accademia be purchased online beforehand.
