My greatest regret of the trip was not finding enough time to sneak away and enjoy what the locals were eating. Granted there was the half day at the start of the tour and another one at the end but that was not enough to make a dent in our Thai-foods-to-try-while-in-Thailand checklist. As we had anticipated, the meals included in the vacation package were little different from what we could find back in the States: overly sweet and lacking any flavorful punches.
On our last night in Ayutthaya, as if our tour leader sensed some members’ need to see more of the culinary side of Thailand, he had invited a handful of us to visit a local night market. Bob and I were able to knock two things off our list: insects and blood clams, aptly named because of the color of the juice they released.
