Where were the stinking benches? The Praca do Comercio (“Square of Commerce”) was built on the spot where the Paco da Ribeira (the royal palace) formerly stood before the devastating earthquake and tsunami that leveled the city in 1755. The space measures nearly 330,000 square feet and city architects did not think to add a few benches or potted trees for shade and rest for the weary tourist? Someone’s head should roll!

The south end of the plaza faces the Tagus river while the north end is bordered by the Arco da Rua Augusta; in the center gallantly stands, astride a mighty seed, a tribute to King Jose I.
