We realized early on during our first excursion to Europe that for any and all future visits we would want to stay as close to locals as possible. We had hoped to enjoy that same intimate yet eye-opening experience we had staying with Peter and Traude in Austria. Hotels would be used only as an absolute last resort (lol!). For us, the idea of staying in three-star lodgings was akin to being a spectator in a stadium suite watching the game and never getting to touch the turf. What kind of vacation would that be?
But how would we accomplish this? We couldn’t simply walk up to some random person’s home in a foreign country and ask if we could stay for several days. Or could we? Thankfully there was Airbnb.

Home, even if just for a few shorts days, is the structure, like a ribcage, that protects all that is important within and shelters from the outside world. It is where, in the morning, we emerge to explore a foreign city and where, in the evening, we retire after a long day of sightseeing.
