TRAVEL TIP: Many of the more popular European capital cities have “Passes” for visitors that provide free admission to museums, discounted or free travel on public transportation, and discounts at certain attractions, businesses, and restaurants. They can be bought online before arriving (picked up locally) and usually have set durations; there are two versions of the Roma Pass, a 48-hour one and 72-hour one. While on the surface, they may appear to be good value for the money, use judgment when deciding to make the purchase. If you are an avid museum-goer, the Pass may be a no-brainer. However, if you plan on visiting only a couple museums than the Pass might be overkill. Similarly, if you expect to be walking to most of your attractions, with the occasional bus or metro ride, or will be sightseeing just for the day or a couple hours than the cost might outweigh the benefit. The timing of the use of the Pass is also important. You would not want activate the 48-hour Pass on the first day when you plan on seeing attractions beginning on the second and third day of your trip. Read the limitations and restrictions carefully prior to pressing that BUY button. Not all museums are free or included, some just come with reduced entry costs. There are also geographical limits on how far outside the city the Pass is valid. You may also not be interested in any of the businesses or restaurants that are discounted. Note that the Roma Pass is NOT VALID for the express train from the airport to central Rome.
The Roma Pass can be picked up at the Tourist Infopoint in Terminal 3 (just past Customs in the International Arrivals area) of Leonardo Da Vinci-Fiumcino International Airport.
There is an alternative pick up point (among several others) for the Pass at the Tourist Information Center in Termini Station. We had a little trouble finding it at first. But if you are looking at head of the station, where all the trains are parked, it should be on the left hand side of the building (on Platform 24), fronting Via Giovanni Giolitti street.
